CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry

Duration: 6-8 hours 

 

Pre-requisites: Nil

This unit of competency specifies the mandatory work health and safety training required prior to undertaking construction work. The unit requires the person to demonstrate personal awareness and knowledge of health and safety legislative requirements in order to work safely and prevent injury or harm to self and others. It covers identifying and orally reporting common construction hazards, understanding basic risk control measures, and identifying procedures for responding to potential incidents and emergencies. It also covers correctly selecting and fitting common personal protective equipment (PPE) used for construction work.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit. Relevant work health and safety state and territory regulatory authorities should be consulted to confirm jurisdictional requirements.

This unit of competency does not replace the necessity for a site induction. 

 

Foundation Skills Required:
Foundation skills are a series of underpinning communication skills required for participation in a workplace, community and in an adult education and training

  • Problem Solving Skills - to select risk control measures

  • Reading- follow pictorial instructions and reading instructions written in English

  • Oral communication – ask clarifying questions, communicate on hazards and listen to instructions to identify safety information

  • Numeracy – to locate and recognise numbers commonly used in safety signage

  • Basic safety and control measures to reduce risks in construction workplaces

  • Basic duty of care requirements

  • Meaning of hazards and risks and the principles behind managing them

  • Basic procedures for assessing first aid

  • Construction hazards

  • Construction work requiring a high risk work licence

  • Types of PPE 

  • Construction emergencies and incidents

  • Safe work practices that should be followed in construction 

  • Safety signage in the construction industry

Licensing Requirements
This unit is regulated by the relevant state based work health and safety authorities. At the completion of this unit you can be issued a construction industry white card which is recognised nationally.
