RIIWHS204D Working safely at heights

This Nationally Recognised course has been developed to provide participants with a theory and practical knowledge of equipment requirements and safe work methods to be used when working at heights. 
The course is designed for persons who are required to work in areas where there may be a risk of falling from one level to another and or those who may be required to act as standby personnel and manage or supervise persons required to work at heights.
 
Participants completing this course will understand the legislative requirements detailed in the WH&S Regulation and relevant Australian Standards, Codes of Practice (managing the risk of falls) and the inspection, operation and maintenance of associated safety equipment used for working at heights.
The participant will be required to select and fit a suitable fall arrest harness, access an area at heights and familiarise themselves with the various fall protection equipment available. They will also have to demonstrate an understanding of suspension trauma resulting from a fall.

CONTENT
Identify the WHS requirements for working at heights
Identify the hazards and managing the risks associated with working at heights
Identifying preferred fall prevention / fall protection methods in relation to identified risk
Selecting & inspecting appropriate equipment for a nominated working at heights task
Selecting and safely installing suitable equipment for the nominated working at heights task
Selecting, inspecting, fitting & safe use of a fall protection device (fall arrest harness)
Safely attaching to various fall protection devices (travel safe system / anchor point etc)
Complete risk assessment and permit for task
Safely performing a work at heights task 
Demonstrate the emergency procedures & rescue of a suspended worker 
Safely dismantle, clean, inspect and store working at heights tools & equipment in a secure position

COMPETENCIES

RECOMMENDED RECERTIFICATION PERIOD
The Qld Coal Mining Act requires all coal mine workers to complete a refresher of every skill that they have a unit of competency for at least once every 5 years. The holder of this unit may have to complete this refresher to obtain or maintain authorisation to work safely at heights 

Note: This unit should be a pre-requisite prior to completing RIIHAN301E Operate Elevated Work Platform (EWP)
